birds - TREATMENT AND CONTROL
What pests do you have loitering around your property? Here’s what you should know about the four pest birds in Australia.
PEST BIRDS
Pest birds are more than a nuisance, they damage property with their nesting habits and their droppings. As well as displace native bird species and encourage pest critters like flies, lice and cockroaches. They also spread diseases and retain harmful bacteria.
In Australia, there are four types of bird pests – pigeons, sparrows, mynas and starlings.
Pigeons
All throughout Australia, pigeons are the most common pest bird. They are very dependent on people which is why they’re found mostly in urban areas. Generally, pigeons are grey in colour with distinct red feet and two parallel black bars on their wings.
Sparrows
Sparrows can be found in urban and rural areas of Australia. They have dark beaks with brown feet and legs and measure up to 160 mm in length.
Mynas
Mynas are a South Asian bird that are a common pest in Sydney and rural areas of Queensland, Melbourne, Tasmania, NSW and Adelaide. They have a distinct yellow beak, legs and a patch along and behind their eyes. The head is black and hooded, while the body is brown.
Starling
Starlings are considered one of the world’s most invasive species of bird – they’re found all throughout Australia in towns, cities and open country areas. Starlings are chunky with short tails and long slender beaks similar to blackbirds. When they are in flight, they look like four pointed stars which is how they got their name.
Treatment
Our team always starts with a thorough inspection. One of our techs will inspect the indoor and outdoor areas of your home to identify areas of concentrated bird activity. Evaluating environmental factors like landscaping, possible nesting or roosting areas and food sources the birds may be relying on.
Based on what we find during our inspection, we’ll design a pest management plan to help reduce bird populations and nesting sites. This pest management plan will include recommendations including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and techniques that focus on eliminating the pest and resolving the underlying causes which may attract them to your property.
