Had enough of chewed through wires?
Mice and Rat ControL - CAIRNS
It’s a pain to deal with rats and mice scraping in walls or thumping around on ceilings. Even worse, around the world rats and mice are known to spread over 35 diseases, so it’s a good idea to leave this to the experts.
WHAT THEY ARE
Rats and mice are both rodents, so they look similar – there are two key differences between rats & mice. Rats are larger and heavier while mice have smaller slender bodies. Mice also have long slender tails (for their body size) covered in hair compared to a rat’s tails which are shorter, thicker and hairless. As annoying as a rat and mouse infestation might seem, the reality is much grosser. Their filthy behaviour means you’ll find them crawling around in the most unsanitary and bacteria-infested areas such as rubbish bins – and with a wildly robust GI tract, they’re able to digest even the most rotten of foods.
One of the most important differences in behaviour between rats and mice, is that mice are curious and rats are cautious.
Cautious rats: Rats are very careful and will choose to avoid new things in their path until they have had time to get used to them being there.
Curious mice: Mice are very curious and will investigate anything new.
Mice are able to climb and exploit or squeeze into even the tiniest of gaps – gaps as small as the size of a pencil. Gaining entry to your home or business by crawling through any accessible hole or gap they can squeeze through..
You don’t want mice who just tucked into a week-old ham sandwich and slid over a maggot-infested clump of tomato sauce to be the same mice sliding and crawling over your plates and silverware. You can spot an infestation by chewed objects and droppings.
Unlike mice, which rarely burrow, rats will dig under buildings, along fences, and under plants and debris. Larger rats often hide away in panel insulation, run or create nests in hidden areas, ceiling voids, underneath floors or any hole. This means they can enter into your home or business and chew away at the timber structure or even the wiring, creating a potential hazard.
